Ft. Detrick, MD
The Necropsy Room in Building 1412 is a laboratory building associated with the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases located at Fort Detrick, MD. The necropsy room project involved the selective demolition of a portion of the existing walls, ceilings, and portions of casework, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, located on the second floor.
Kirlin designed and renovated the space to provide a new entry vestibule, modified the existing casework, replaced doors, installed new drywall ceiling with new lighting fixtures, epoxy painted walls, and re-applied an epoxy resin flooring membrane.
The exhaust and plumbing system was likewise reconfigured to accommodate the installation of two new downdraft necropsy tables for more efficient utilization of the space. The necropsy room is a BSL-3 containment laboratory, so special mechanical system improvements were required for the room to function as intended. As a result, the single exhaust fan was replaced with two exhaust fans and a second HEPA filter for improved ventilation and air pressure control.
